Pretty Lake Quiet Area (walk-in)

Upper Peninsula, E (Luce County) · Michigan DNR (state forest)

Fee, first-come

A chain of five clear no-motor lakes in the sand country west of the Two Hearted, with walk-in sites a short carry from the parking spur. Portage the canoe between lakes and the only wake is yours. The UP's easiest taste of paddle-in solitude.

The vibe

Steps from Jack LakeDark skies (Bortle ~3)Wooded

Works for hammock, tent. Measured dark skies, a real one for stargazing.

Hanging a hammock?

Depends whose trees they are. The DNR makes the rules, and wilderness areas can have their own take on hammocks, so check before you count on a hang. Wherever you hang: wide tree-friendly straps, no nails or wire, and don't tear the bark. We can't see the trunks from here, so eyeball it on arrival.

The rules

Five walk-in sites on the quiet lakes carry the state-forest campground fee, self-registered; the drive-in loop at Pretty Lake is its own rustic campground. No motors on the lakes.

~30 min northwest of Newberry, sand roads.

Thicket is not the managing agency and not affiliated with it. The vibe read is our estimate from open data (OpenStreetMap, USGS elevation, NASA Black Marble nighttime light); the rules, permits, and access can change. Confirm with the agency before you go, and leave no trace.
